New Blog - Ramencon Notes, New Products, and Nyancon Incoming!

Just got back from Ramencon on Sunday so it’s time for a writeup :D

So the hotel… Let me just say this, NEVER stay at a Key West Hotel… They use actual keys instead of cards, which is quite a bit less safe. The person at the front desk didn’t understand me. I literally had to ask 5 times over the phone for a ‘do not disturb’ sign, and he still didn’t understand me, so he came up to our room. Turns out, they do not have ‘do not disturb’ signs. Their carpets looked like they had never been washed. They didn’t even give us shampoo, and they gave us ONE bar of soap. Boyfriend found a bug on his pillow, and his other girlfriend got bit by a spider in bed. It was not fun.

The first day of the con itself made us all a little nervous. We got there early and helped MetalArtisan with his Oriental Fighting Arts of the Orient panel, which is always a blast. Then it was time to get down to the dealer’s room. We were told that there were aroudn 3,000 attendees registered, and there were some great names on the guest list that I was very excited for as well. Unfortunately, that did not translate to actual customers… Until day 2 that is. Day 2 was MUCH better, and was punctuated by more fun moments as well!

I gave J. Michael Tatum (AKA Kyouya from Ouran High School Host Club, Sebastian from Black Butler, and a whole slew of other awesome characters from other awesome anime/games/etc) a goblet with the Ouran crest on it that I etched for him. He was super happy about it, and Todd Haberkorn commented on their matching set (I gave Todd a matching champagne flute at Glass City Comic con) so I was pleased that Todd liked his gift as well. I got to take a quick selfie with J. Michael Tatum, but then I had to run back to my booth because my goodness - all the customers! Let’s just say that we’re going to have a LOT of restocking and a few more extra commissions to do next month before Nyancon… I also had a lot of fun talking with Tasty Peach studio ^_^ It was our first time actually talking, though we’ve been to cons at the same time before. Can’t wait to see you guys again at Youma! :D

That evening, we ran up to panel room 1 for the DC Douglas Albert Wesker Erotic Fanfiction panel - one of our personal favorites… We’d seen the panel at Youmacon last year and Anime Midwest this past year, and it’s still awesome! There are always new fanfics he reads, and the new volunteers make the panel hilarious! This time, J. Michael Tatum showed up and DC had him come up as a volunteer. It was hilarious! I got a couple pics, but sorry guys - no filming was allowed. Just… use your imagination. Or better yet, come to the panel!

Sunday was pretty relaxing. We didn’t do too awful much, but I did get to see some con-friends, which is always great! Next on our list is Nyancon - just barely a week away at this point! We loved Nyancon last year, so we’ll be making them a special one of a kind etched glass with their mascot on it as our donation this year. We hope they love it as much as we love them!

We have some awesome new products that we’d love to show off! In our mad dash to prepare for Nyancon and then quickly after that Youmacon, we’ve been trying to upload a new product every day. Updated 2014 Con List

(x) *January 3-5 – Anime-ZAP, Embassy Suites, East Peoria, IL - small, but I might go back because I love the people who run the con ;3

(x) *March 22 – Animarathon, Bowling Green State Uniersity, Bowling Green, OH - Same as last year - I’d buy my table for next year now if I could!

(x) April 4-6 – Shutocon, Lansing Center & Radisson, Lansing, MI - Was GREAT! Can’t wait for next year!

(x) April 10-13 – Shinbokucon, Sawmill Creek Resort of Huron, Ohio – Not too shabby, though I think buying a vendor table was a bit premature. Next year I’ll try for an artist booth instead. Met some great people though!

(x) April 25-27 – Midwest Media Expo, Detroit Renaissance Center, Detroit, Michigan – Fabulous! Can’t wait for next year!

(x) May 10 – Anime Park, Canton High School, Canton, Mi – Wonderful, as always! I love small, close cons!

(x) May 17 – Electronica Expo, Wayne County Fairgrounds, Belleville, Michigan – VERY small. Not sure I’ll go back next year.

(x) May 23-25 – Animinneapolis, Hyatt Regency Minneapolis, Minneapolis, MN – Another wonderful con from the makers of Anime Midwest! Can’t wait for next year!

(x) May 30-June 01 - Indy Pop Con, Hyatt Regency Indianapolis, Indianapolis, IN - A great little first year comic con. They didn’t have as many people as we expected, but we still did well enough to buy our table for next year on the spot :3

(x) July 4-6 – Anime Midwest, Hyatt Regency O’Hare, Chicago, IL – Just as fabulous as last year! :D (Big Grin) (Big Grin) Might need a dealer space for all the new products I intend to have for next year ;3

(x) July 11-13 - Atomic Lollipop, Toronto Science Center, Toronto, Canada - The convention itself was ok, and seeing Canada was cool, but I didn’t like the way that NOTHING was regulated. I think I won’t be returning because of that fact.

(x) July 26-28 – Glass City Comic Con, Seagate Convention Centre, Toledo, OH – Was fun! Will be returning if possible :3

(x) August 1-3 – Go!Daikocon, Auburn Hills Marriott Pontiac at Centerpoint, Pontiac, MI – Even more fun than last year with all the panels I ran this year!

(x) August 14-17 - GenCon, Indianapolis Convention Center, Indianapolis, IN - So much fun! Can’t wait for next year! :D (Big Grin)

(x) August 22-24 - Matsuricon, Hyatt Regency Columbus – Columbus, OH - Made money, but the experience was not great :/

(x) September 19-21 - Ramencon, Raddison Holiday Star Plaza, Merriville, IN - Was super fun and pretty profitable! Would definitely go back!

When Brazilian graphic designer Carol Rossetti began posting colorful illustrations of women and their stories to Facebook, she had no idea how popular they would become.

Thousands of shares throughout the world later, the appeal of Rosetti’s work is clear. Much like the street art phenomenon Stop Telling Women To Smile, Rossetti’s empowering images are the kind you want to post on every street corner, as both a reminder and affirmation of women’s bodily autonomy.

"It has always bothered me, the world’s attempts to control women’s bodies, behavior and identities," Rossetti told Mic via email. "It’s a kind of oppression so deeply entangled in our culture that most people don’t even see it’s there, and how cruel it can be."

Rossetti’s illustrations touch upon an impressive range of intersectional topics, including LGBTQ identity, body image, ageism, racism, sexism and ableism. Some characters are based on the experiences of friends or her own life, while others draw inspiration from the stories many women have shared across the Internet.

"I see those situations I portray every day," she wrote. "I lived some of them myself."

Despite quickly garnering thousands of enthusiastic comments and shares on Facebook, the project started as something personal — so personal, in fact, that Rossetti is still figuring out what to call it. For now, the images reside in albums simply titled “WOMEN in english!" or "Mujeres en español!" which is fitting: Rossetti’s illustrations encompass a vast set of experiences that together create a powerful picture of both women’s identity and oppression.

One of the most interesting aspects of the project is the way it has struck such a global chord. Rossetti originally wrote the text of the illustrations in Portuguese, and then worked with an Australian woman to translate them to English. A group of Israeli feminists also took it upon themselves to create versions of the illustrations in Hebrew. Now, more people have reached out to Rossetti through Facebook and offered to translate her work into even more languages. Next on the docket? Spanish, Russian, German and Lithuanian.

It’s an inspiring show of global solidarity, but the message of Rossetti’s art is clear in any language. Above all, her images celebrate being true to oneself, respecting others and questioning what society tells us is acceptable or beautiful.

"I can’t change the world by myself," Rossetti said. "But I’d love to know that my work made people review their privileges and be more open to understanding and respecting one another."
